Summer 2008 at MDI day 2
Another great day here in Maine!
![]()
I spent the entire day out on the hills.
While walking around on the carriage trails I encountered one of the carriage tours. Pretty normal. But this time some nice old ladies secretly invited me onboard. I snuck on and when the driver asked who I was, that just said I was with them.
![]()
So I got a little free ride.

Summer 2008 at MDI
So I'm back in Maine for the week and I did not wast any time to get out to the trails.
Today I went up Mensell and Bernard mountain. It was a easy hike, these hills are not much higher then 1000 feet.
While I was out there, I took some HDR photos out in the fog.
After all the hiking, I went out for dinner with the family. On the way back they bought me a camel pack to stay hydrated in my hikes. Aren't my parents just the best!

Moving, Moving, Moving...
Boxes go out of one house, into cars, then into another house... repeat 500 times.
BTW, the new place has a name:
Ciel sur terre
It was inspired by a very sad song.

FairPoint is slowing me down
Not my internet speed, but how long till I can move into the new apartment. There is no active phone line at the new place. So first we need to have the loop installed before we can migrate the service.
So that is not happening till Monday. I am not living somewhere that there is no internet.

New Laptop time
A combination of factors have come together to make now the right time to invest in a new laptop. I guess the biggest factor is the death of the backlight in my old laptop. Next on the list is the fact that 867 Mhz G4 is not really fast enough to do much of anything any more (other then browsing and Email). It definitely cannot keep up with my photoshop, and media editing aspirations.
so I dropped some cash on a 15 inch, 2.2Ghz MacBookPro. It has all the power I will need for the foreseeable few years.
It should be here by Monday, so I am definitely looking forward to that.

Finaly setup my verizon account
We have been using verizon DSL here at the tower for the last 2 years. Jesse has always been in charge of it and I never thought much of it. However, the first bill came in that I need to pay and it got me thinking about all the services verizon offers that I never utilize.
So i setup a verizon.net account and found the goodie I was looking for. Full access to the verizon Usenet servers. This is old skool file swapping it its best.
but this old dog has learns some new tricks. nbz files can be used to find all that parts of a particular file that has been spread across the server. Pretty nifty.

New place to live!
Mike, Matt, and I have a new place to live! I found a 3 bedroom apartment for $1500 per month, ALL utilities INCLUDED!
Nice!
It is still right in town and walking distance to the Meda offices.
I got a call this morning saying that we have the place available whenever we want it. We missed the start of this month but we will be able to rent for the last half of the months.
So round about the 15th, we will be pulling out of LaTour.

Letting the perfect apartment slip through my fingers.
I was so sure that i had found a great place to live for the next year. It was a three bedroom duplex located near downtown. It was just the right price and perfect for Mike, Mat and myself.
I had planed to send in the applications this Monday. But when I gave the owner a call, I found the duplex had been taken by someone else. Apparently they had filled out the application on the spot and had the security deposit on hand in cash.
They must have really wanted the place.
So I keep looking for our new home.

Looking for apprtments.
I find myself in the same place I was 2 years ago; looking for a apartment. Having a place to play DDR without disturbing anyone was my biggest criteria. That has not changed. However, now I also need to be within walking distance of the Medaverse offices.
So I have been checking craigslist apartments in Dover everyday. I most have looked at atlest 5 apartments so far. Non of them are exactly what we need.
I have a good looking prospect for this evening. A 3 bedroom duplex in downtown. Wish me luck with that.

Mens Wear House: Suit beyond alteration.
When I graduation in 2004, my Dad bought me a suit to wear for the presentation of my senior project. It was tailored to my size and rather expensive. But it is okay to spend money on a suit because one can get many years of use out of it.
Fast forward to this Saturday. I have a wedding to attend next month. I thought I would pull out my old suit and have it re-fit to my new size. I took it down to Mens Wear House where they said they would re-alter any seam that was tailored for free. I was sure that all that needed to be done was have it be taken in a little bit and the suit would look great on me again.
However, when I showed the suit to the tailor, he just shook he head and said I had better just take my suit (that I only wore three times) and give it to the Salvation Army. The suit was so far from my measurements now, it would have needed to be completely rebuilt. That would cost more then buying a new suit.
...and suit are expensive.

Alternators and expensive car repair
So it all stated with a low battery light on my dashboard. I was hoping it was a bad car battery. The battery was still under warranty and all I had to do is stroll over to Walmart and exchange it.

So a popped the new battery inn and everything ran fine for a few days. Then the battery cam on again. It must be a problem with the alternator. Thats a little beyond my facilities to replace, so it was a trip to the car shop.
Alternators are expensive. The one for my car cost a little over $250. So I'm going to be cutting back on the rest of my expenses this month. :(
However I have a working car again.

Astrology is to close for comfort.
Just on a whim I was reading about the personality traits of my astrological sign, Sagittarius.
I was surprised how much of the description matched my personality. I really don't believe in this stuff. Most of the people I know are nothing like their sign is supposed to be.
I guess I am one of those unusual coincidences.

I have finally got over my cold and can return to my running route. Of course, it starts raining right as I am as far away from the house as posable.
I have heard that running in the rain is a sure fire way to get oneself sick. So I charged back to the house at full speed.
Then as I get home, the rain stops. Isn't that the way it always go.

Crazy week
Wow, what a week.
Wednesday a reporter and camera crew came to the Meda offices to interview us founders for CNBC. Lots of questions about what we are up to and our opinions about Nintendo's current plans for WiiWare.
It was a lot of fun. You would think it is high pressure, but I felt realty chill about it. These people are here to find out about we are doing. They will get whatever we chose to fee them.
So sure, these bigwig reporter and producer show up. But we are the ones in control here. Its really cool.

The great purge continues!
This morning SB and I went around LaTour finding every bit of old trash laying around and bagging it up. It did not take long to FILL the van with bags of trash. There must have been a dozen bags of trash. Some of it was fresh trash, others of it where form who knows how long ago.
But it is all out. LaTour is a little bit cleaner now.

Just a generally bad day
Just a day when I could not get anything done. Spinning my wheels with problems that I just can't find the time to solve. These days are the worst. I depend so much on being successful in my job to give some day-to-day validation. When that is not there, I start questioning why I put so much energy into a job that gives me no rewards.
Not even going out for ice cream helps.

Why no blogs?
Over the last two months the frequency with which I have been writing blog entries has fallen off dramatically. The reason is my life has become absurdly busy with stuff I cannot write about. This is mostly secret activity at Medaverse, and social drama I would rather not let the worked know about.
So here are a few light items that I can talk about.
- I will be moving out of LaTour this summer. The landlord wants to raise the rent to $1550 per month. When I read that, I nearly laughed myself off the chair. Then I realized it was not a absurd joke and the landlord must be crazy. So its time to go apartment hunting. The current market is bad for home owners, bit great for renting. We are going to find a great new place.
- I have taken up running. A lot of running. I keep pushing my self to go further and further every other night. So far I am up to 4.4 miles per night. Not bad for the fat kid.
Thats it for now. I will make sure to find more time to write. Right now my legs hur and I'm going to get some sleep.

I know that I said that I stopped drinking, but I had a really bad day. Last week Cap and I had the China Palace's Tiki Bar recommended to us. After a long day, what better way to unwind then with friends over piles of chicken lo mein, teriyaki beef, and exotic tiki drinks.
I liked just about everything about the place. The food is good, the drinks are strong, and the atmosphere is chill.

Not participating in Easter (even a little).
I have never been into the whole religious aspect of Easter. But have always partaken in the western tradition of celebrating with candy and chocolates.
Late last year I discovered that my skin is sensitive to chocolate and consuming it will cause never ending acne. So I voted in favor of my complexion and stopped eating it. Easter this year has been almost nonexistent for me. No chocolate bunnies, no Cadbury cream eggs, nothing like that at all. I did have a few Peeps. These are really not very good.
Easter is a non holiday for me now.

My take on this whole net neutrality
lol, this is dumb. No one wants to pay for tiered internet service. Any ISP that does this will only make there customer unhappy and open the avenues for new ISP competition.

The return of the Ford Fiesta!
The first car I ever owed was a tiny Ford Fiesta. I always loved that little car. It weighed practically nothing and with a full four cylinder and 5 speed standard transmission it would fly down the road.
However, Ford ended the Fiesta line in 1997. Apparently the age of the SUV pushed out the need for the sub-compact econo-car. However, there will be anew Ford Fiesta! w00t!
Speaking of Fiestas, I always wanted a Festiva SHOgun.

Making Dinner for the Girls
Cap and I made dinner for Laurie and Stacy tonight. It has been a while since we have entertained company in this way, so I saw it as a bit of a challenge. Cooking is not the challenge, doing it in a fun efficient way is.
I found a good looking stuffed rolled chicken recipe that would work perfectly with a alfredo fettuccine dish. We picked up Laurie and went shopping for all the things we would need. I made the mistake of skipping lunch and was in a rather grumpy mood by the time dinner rolled around.
I took the chicken and Cap made up alfredo sauce from scratch. After that all we need was some garlic bread and steamed broccoli and we had a heck of a meal. It came out well. The girls seemed to enjoy themselves even thought they left shortly after dinner was over. Too bad.
They missed out on my attempt to make my own spritz cookies. We don't have a press to squeeze out the cookies, so I improvised by putting the batter into a plastic bad and then clipping off a corner. Then just squeeze out as many cookies as I could before my arms gave out.
Those are tasty!

The nastiest of New Hampshire Weather
Today it started with snow then turned to ice before soaking everything with a thick layer of water. I call it a layer of water because it is just that. A layer of water on top of the now and ice. It makes walking around outside a cold experience as there is no way too keep my shoes dry.
I'm lucky that the rain is slightly warmer then the air. So when I gave up and just accepted the dampness, I was cold but not unbearably so.
I guess it would have been smarter to just stay inside, but what fun is that?

Helvetica is a film about its namesake. It is a film about a font (or typeface) called Helvetica. It explores the origin of this ubiquitous font and how it has influenced graphic design till the present day.
I would highly recommend this film for anyone who has ever been interested in typography or how it relates to graphic design. I found leaning about the path graphic design has taken in the last 40 incredibly inspiring.
There is a copy of the film on google video. It will probably be taken down eventually so catch it while you can.

I little match making...
There is always that little twinge of devilishness that one feels when trying to set two people up. It is like a little challenge to see how good you are at adjusting the course of other peoples lives to facilitate a new relationship.
In this case it is not manipulation that is necessary. It is more about seeing potential roadblocks and pitfalls and getting them out of the way. Everything else will take care of its self.
Cryptic? yes, but I do not want to gloat over handy work that is not done yet.

Google Flight sim
There is a hidden feature in Google Earth that makes the program into a simple flight simulator.
It only has two types of aircraft. However, it is enough to get a better feeling of just how big the earth is. When manipulating Google earth, the program alows the user to traverse the planet at impossible speeds. So the earth feels more like the size of a basketball not a planet sized hunk of rock. In flight sim mode, the surface of the planet moves under the user at an accurately simulated speed. This gives the user a much better fell of the scale of everything.
Here is a screen shot of me flying over my parents house in Maine. In just a few minutes time from there I entered into the low mountains that occupy most of Mount Desert Island. I was surprised how many I could identify just by flying around.

I want: Theater Lights
It is very rare that I see something expensive and just think to myself "I want that!" However I had one such episode recently.
I was talking with Laurie about how much I like photography and how I put special emphasis on lighting the scene. However I do not own any lights that would allow me to take good indoor photos. So I checked out how much it costs to buy lighting equipment for photography. I found any kind of studio lamps come in super cheap or overly expensive and all they do is produce a pure white light to capturing accurate color.
I thought about it for a while and decided that is not what I want to do. I want to play with color, intensity from multiple sources at different angles. What I want is a set of theater lights.
I looked around the internet and found this. All kinds of packages of lamps and stands with everything I need included.
Oh the fun I could have with these. I want some of these lights so bad right now.

Cloverfield: NOT a monster movie
I went to see Cloverfield with Cap tonight. I am not going to give away any spoilers, however I will give my reaction.
I was disappointed by the film. I expected the movie was about a monster. It is in fact about a few boring characters who happen to be in the same place as a monster attack. That is probably my biggest grip about the movie, it never explores what the monster is.
During the whole thing the audience never gets out of the state of panic and confusion that the characters are experiencing. So I am not sure what to take from this film. I probable will not watch it again because panic and confusion are not things I like to watch people experience.

Voting day!
So now the time has come to take part in democracy and vote in the preliminary election.
It is convenient that the voting location for my ward in Dover is just two blocks away. I was torn as to who to vote for until I registered for my party at the polling center. I had boiled my choices down to two options. I was either going to vote for Ron Paul because he is the only non Neocon on the Republican ballot or John Edwards because he is the only candidate that has a clue about the video game industry. If a keep with this game development gig, law that effect it will become of great importance in my livelihood. I would rather have a president that knows what is going on and does not pass knee-jerk laws that would effect it.
In the end I went with Edwards. I kinda regret it now because afterward I discovered that he is considered out of the race after the Iowa caucuses. Oh well. I still voted for the one that I thought is best for me. That is all that matters in the democratic process.

January thaw
I spent most of the morning listening to the ice falling off the roof.
All last week it has been snapping cold out side. The kind of cold that makes snow sound like parched Styrofoam and black-ice so transparent parent it is still invisible after you fall on it.
However last night it warmed up. This is a New Hampshire January, so warm mean 40°F. IT is so nice to see the grown growing up through the white and brown snow. It keeps me reminded that there is a planet made of rock under this frozen exterior.

Hollister white bread
I stopped into Central Wave to chat with Les tonight. The Wave is one of Dover's fine nightlife centers that has a bright sports bar feel to it. However tonight I was a little freaked out by the atmosphere there. It had nothing to do with the establishment, I was troubled by the customers. Every last person in the Wave was wearing Hollister or Abercrombie & Fitch clothes. I could tell this not because I have a eye for over priced brand merchandise. I could tell where everyone had purchased their garments because Hollister and Abercrombie plaster their names in large print all over their clothing.
As I looked around the room, the effect was like being at a cheerleader competition where instead of schools, each person overtly represented some over priced boutique.
This would not have been so bad if I did not know anyone there. However, I ran into a few old acquaintance who apparently been recruited to team Hollister. I thought the need to look identical and conform to some standard died out after high school. Apparently the need to look like a a member of some preppy-yuppie army has come into style.
I alway thought that intention of dress for night life socializing was to standout and draw attention. Not be another faceless member of a paint-by-numbers fashion herd.

Growing some facial hair
Yesterday I want out and bought some bad-ass new cloths. Now I need a bad-ass new look to go with them. I looked around the internet for just the type of bad-ass I want to be and fond one the the greatest bad-asses of all time:
Evil Spock!

What makes evil Spock so bad-ass? That oh so menacing looking goatee on his Vulcan chin. So I am going to grow me one of those.
ha hah ha... Evil is just a few weeks of careful shaving away!

Out shoping with Cap
I do not usually go to the mall. Everything there is over priced. However, I just happened to see then ultra cool jacket at Macy's on Monday. I did not buy it then because I did not want an impulse item. So I thought about it for a few days.
Today I needed to take Cap to Portsmouth for a few errands. It would take me near the mall and I still wanted the jacket. So I decided to stop in and buy it and a few other items I had been thinking about getting.
In the past I had been dissing Hot Topic for being so fake. I walked past there again to find that along with preprocessed angst filled merchandise, they had a ton of Nintendo swag. Cap got a cool Zelda wallet. I found a few more things I would think about buying for a while.
You win this one Hot Topic.

New Year's day!
Wow what a night. Crazy parties, dancing, drinking, the whole nine yards.
Cap and I went to the first party at Darrel's house. There where tons of people there. We had games of Ping balls and cards that involves drinking as a punishment for losing. However, I had to exclude myself from those activities because I needed to drive to the next party at Mojito's. I actually convinced Jess and Nicole to come out and partake in the festivities for a little while. it was at Mojito's that we took part in the traditional countdown and proceeding jubilee rioting.
The next morning we met up with Darrel's party again at a restaurant for breakfast. Quite a few of us where nursing hangovers with coffee and pancakes.

New Year's Eve day!
Usually its tradition to work at least half of New Year's Eve day. However, this year we have had the most inclement weather I remember. Inches of snow have been falling and today has been no exception. Instead of work we are just sat in the house waiting for the plow to come by and free us.
We will be out of here before the eve's celebration begin.

Brunch at the Links At Outlook
Cap and I when down to the Links At Outlook for brunch. Les is the head chef there so the food is fantastic. The only problem is eating there is slightly above our means. It is nice to treat ourselves to a fancy meal but we can make a habit of it.

Transformers on HD-DVD
Cap picked up Transformers on HD-DVD and I had a chance to watch it today. The art style that was picked for the Autobots and Decepticons is visually complicated. So having it display at 1080i brings out a lot of detail of the robots. This detail would probably be lost in standard 480 definition. The modelers and animators put a years of work into these visuals. It is only fair that we get to appreciate their work to its fullest.

Useless time between Christmas and new years.
The time between December 25 and January 1st is incredibly useless. Nothing ever seems to get done.
I have a few projects at work right now. Chances of any of those getting done before 2008 are slim to none.

Watching movies with Laurie
Laurie and I are now best of friends. I spent my Christmas day hanging out with her watching The Princess Bride. Not a bad way to spend it.

And Christmas is ... done!
I managed to compress an entire seasons worth of holiday cheer into 362 miles and two days.

With this kind of efficiency I may be able to complete Christmas in a day or less next year!
Now I just sit back and relax. Cap has got his favorite Christmas movie,
