My take on this whole net neutrality

lol, this is dumb. No one wants to pay for tiered internet service. Any ISP that does this will only make there customer unhappy and open the avenues for new ISP competition.

The big broadband providers do not have the monopoly on the ISP market that they think they do.

P.B. Crisps: what ever happened to these?

For some reason I suddenly had a urge for Planters' P.B. Crisps.

But according to wikipedia, they have been discontinued. :(

Happy again :)

I was in a week long fight with a friend due to a misunderstanding and a lose in trust. However, tonight we made up so I am happy again.

I am not well made to fight with people for long periods of time. I would rather not repeat the event.

Missed Paranoid Social Club

Al right, this gets me a little testy. Cap and I have been looking forward to seeing Paranoid Social Club all month. Then when the day arrives, I spend most of the evening getting stuff done for my boss who keeps calling me and nagging me (on a Friday night).

So it all gets done before the show. However, the Dover Brick House has a relatively small capacity. So the place was filled up well before the start of the show. Well before we arrived.

So it was no show for us.. :(

The bearer of my mistakes.

We all make mistakes. We make tons of them all the time. That is part of being human. However, what if there is one person in your life that bears the brunt of your mistakes. All the worst of your missteps, accidental slips of the tongue, and blunders fall on this person over and over. What would this person think of you? What if they stopped believing that the mistakes are mistakes?

OS X user should use Adium for IM.

Support for IM clients on the OS X is weak at best. A lot of them don't work well or are missing features of the PC counterparts. Yahoo IM is a good example of this. It does not even save old chat sessions.

For anyone who has been frustrated by this should take a look at Adium. Adium is a very nice multi-service MI clent that works so well and integrates into the OS X environment.

Sure, keep using iChat for AIM, but for everything else, Adium is the way to go.

The Magician's Last Assistant

The magician had always needed an assistant. I pretty young thing, who knew how the illusions and slight of hand were performed. Of course she knew these things, the magician had shown her how he did them. He explained in the greatest detail the hows and whys of every gesture and word. He thoroughly removed all pretenses of the "magic" he performed on stage.

The magician did this because he needed her complete support and understanding when the show went on. He needed her to help him if a trick failed or an illusion broke. The magician was unsure about his ability to perform, but he knew that he could make it through the night if he had an ally on stage with him.

However, this was not the desire of the assistant. The assistant had taken her job because she loved the "magic." She love to suspend her skepticism just for the moment and let the innocent world of wonder and mystery open before her. She thought when she became a magician's assistant she would have this feeling all the time; being so close to a man who could give it to her.

How disillusioned she became when every trick and mystery was explained. The world of magic lost its innocents and became as mundane as everything else in the world. Eventually the magician saw the disillusionment her eyes. He had needed her so very much. However, if he could not bring the laughter and joy of his performance the one person closest too him, what right had he to bring it to the rest of the world.

So he fired the assistant. Before she left his side, the magician had one last trick just for her. For the first time he did not her show how it was done. The magician realized he did not need her to know how it worked. It just worked, its just that little hint of wonder flowing back into a skeptical world.

The assistant knew why she was being fired. Her position was no longer necessary and she knew that no other assistant would ever work for the magician ever again. She was the magician's last assistant.

The return of the Ford Fiesta!

The first car I ever owed was a tiny Ford Fiesta. I always loved that little car. It weighed practically nothing and with a full four cylinder and 5 speed standard transmission it would fly down the road.

However, Ford ended the Fiesta line in 1997. Apparently the age of the SUV pushed out the need for the sub-compact econo-car. However, there will be anew Ford Fiesta! w00t!

Speaking of Fiestas, I always wanted a Festiva SHOgun.

Making Dinner for the Girls

Cap and I made dinner for Laurie and Stacy tonight. It has been a while since we have entertained company in this way, so I saw it as a bit of a challenge. Cooking is not the challenge, doing it in a fun efficient way is.

I found a good looking stuffed rolled chicken recipe that would work perfectly with a alfredo fettuccine dish. We picked up Laurie and went shopping for all the things we would need. I made the mistake of skipping lunch and was in a rather grumpy mood by the time dinner rolled around.

I took the chicken and Cap made up alfredo sauce from scratch. After that all we need was some garlic bread and steamed broccoli and we had a heck of a meal. It came out well. The girls seemed to enjoy themselves even thought they left shortly after dinner was over. Too bad.

They missed out on my attempt to make my own spritz cookies. We don't have a press to squeeze out the cookies, so I improvised by putting the batter into a plastic bad and then clipping off a corner. Then just squeeze out as many cookies as I could before my arms gave out.

Those are tasty!

Keeping a eye out for bandwidth hogs with IPTraf

At work, most of out network routing is handed by a nifty little Linux router. Every once in a while, someone gets uppity and decided that her or she will use up all the bandwidth. When that happens I use IPTraf to figure out just who the offending user is.

The best tool in IPTraf for doing this is the "LAN station monitor." This will break down the network transmission rates by MAC id. From that I can pinpoint which machine on the network id flooding the connection.

nifty stuff!

Xerces-C++ on a game console platform.

One of the features Medaverse would like to have in the upcoming game engine is the ability to communicate with the outside world using industry standers. So when it can time to find a format to use for serialization. We picked XML because if it wide acceptance and available source code to handle most of the heavy lifting.

Xerces C++ is becoming the standard library for handling XML processing using SAX and DOM methods. Bring it over to a console platform has been a bit of an adventure. There are three servers that Xerces C++ depends on the platform for:
* File IO
* Network IO
* Character encoding

Luckily, Xerces is written on a good OO way. So all i needed to do is make my own implementations of the classes that handle these services. Over all I am very happy with the results.

Domestic Sunday

Not too much to do today. Cap and where going to have Tanya over for a movie but she rain checked at the last minute. So there is not much to do.

Instead I got to work on a rather dirty kitchen floor. Made it all sparkling and clean!

Now I can entertain guests here on Wednesday.

Be Human

Sometimes I feel like I am a machine that wants to learn to be more human.

If I could just be more human
I would see every little thing with a gleam in my eye
If only I was more human
I'd embrace every single feeling that came in my life

Would I care and be forgiving?
Would I be sentimental and would I feel loneliness?

Would I doubt and have misgivings?
Would I cause someone sorrow too? Would I know what to do?

Yeah, it is kind of like that....

The nastiest of New Hampshire Weather

Today it started with snow then turned to ice before soaking everything with a thick layer of water. I call it a layer of water because it is just that. A layer of water on top of the now and ice. It makes walking around outside a cold experience as there is no way too keep my shoes dry.

I'm lucky that the rain is slightly warmer then the air. So when I gave up and just accepted the dampness, I was cold but not unbearably so.

I guess it would have been smarter to just stay inside, but what fun is that?
